This program converts DVI files (produced by the TeX text formatting system)
into PostScript. It is based on a different philosophy from the `dvi2ps'
program that is part of the UNIX TeX distribution. Instead of treating the
printer as a big 300 dpi bitmap engine, it generates resolution-independent
PostScript using real PostScript fonts, thus allowing it to be used with
a Linotron 300 imagesetter at full quality, as well as LaserWriters et al.
It has been designed for speed and simplicity. It does not support
the Computer Modern fonts, but it would if someone did a PostScript
outline font for them. This distribution contains preliminary TFM
files for a large set of Adobe PostScript fonts [sorry, you have to
get the fonts themselves from Adobe...], the source files, and a
small test document. This is meant to be a preliminary release; any
suggestions or bug fixes should be sent to me at the address below.
Note that this is not meant to replace `dvi2ps'. `psdvi' is better for long
documents that use only the Adobe fonts, and generates more compact
PostScript. However, it is probably impractical to try and merge this
program and `dvi2ps' together.
To use the program, type `psdvi filename' and PostScript will be sent to
stdout. The output conforms to the Adobe file structuring conventions,
and seems to coexist with Transcript without complaining (this lets you
reverse and/or select pages, etc.).
Enjoy,
